Location: Kyneton, Victoria, Australia

A farm house complex north-west of Melbourne for a high-tech ultra-fine wool sheep farm, including main house, cottage, garage, machine shed, shearing shed and covered yards.

An isolated farm homestead with a guest wing to one side and machinery and shearing sheds to the other is conflated into a single object set in the open landscape. A high concrete wall, 200m in length, gathers together the ensemble of buildings and establishes for it an overall identity. The wall accomplishes both a practical organising function and an iconic task of locating the complex in the wide panorama. On one hand it tells a story of mass and weight to give substance to the buildings and provide a protective buffer against the climate. On the other hand it operates almost literally as a ruler, giving scale to the buildings in the horizontal limitlessness of the landscape.
