In this project, an ordinary inter-war house is revitalised and augmented to become a contemporary dwelling. Flexible open spaces are key to the living amenity of the home, with the internal spaces seamlessly connecting to the ‘outside room’ of the substantial timber deck, with the accompanying cool patio space below. The rear addition and its junction with the existing building is expressed in the use of distinctive stained timbers and a gridded board cladding system that references the scale and materiality of old and new. Natural light is also core to the concept and utility of the dwelling, integrated with the formal and functional transitions of the building.
