Project Description

The clients, a young family with one child, wanted a house that provided guest accommodation, a library, and an outdoor spa pool, and which takes advantage of the dramatic cliff-edge site covered in native bush.

The design adopts a ‘lean to’ shed form which pitches its roof parallel to the slope of the top of the cliff-edge, minimizing the bulk of the building in this natural setting. Where contours bend in plan, the logical elements of the design bend too, colliding just as the formations of Split Apple Rock collide on the waterline below.

Large frames of laminated timber and expanses of double glazing provide transparency through to the surrounding bush and sea views. The L-shaped plan and courtyard catches maximum sunshine.
